about

This album is a result of letting go. I decided not to play any instruments on this one. Even though it's basically an acoustic guitar, singer-songwriter album, I was just not in any head space to hear my own playing. Taylor Carman plays in a similar style to me, but with a much nicer touch. I wanted to be able to enjoy the music on this album in the same way any other listener would. He played beautifully.

There’s a spoken word piece that I wrote after George Floyd was knelt to death by a white cop. It's become even more relevant in light of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin last week. Don’t worry if you don’t like poetry, it’s more Dr. Seuss than Thoreau and I stand by it. It’s set to a waltz. There's nothing whiter than a waltz.

The cover artwork is by Sally Hayes and was the inspiration for the song "Down to the bottom of the world"
The photo embedded in tracks 3 and 8 is of the two humans in the song ‘Katie and the Ballad of the Cowboymod’. Two young siblings holding hands while they were still young enough for that not to be uncool. Tragically, they never reached the “too cool for school” phase. She was ripped from his life shortly after this picture was taken. I wrote the song after hearing the story. I've tried to do it justice many times. It's finally here on this album. I hope I have kept it simple enough to be sensitive.

All that said, it's not a downer of an album. It has a skip to it. If you find yourself getting bummed out by the words, imagine they're in a language you don't speak.
Whatever language you hear in your head, I do hope that you hear the love that inspired this collection of songs. 2020 has been a bastard and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. We could all use a lot more love right now.
